TATTOO AFTERCARE

Caring for your tattoo correctly can help to avoid complications and assist your tattoo to heal well.

  • First 24 Hours

Gladwrap – remove after 2-3 hours and wash gently and thoroughly to remove excess ink and plasma. Just warm water is fine or an anti-bacterial mild soap. No fragrance soaps or harsh bar soaps. Pat dry with paper towel or a clean towel and let it air dry for the next 24 hours. Please be careful not to wear tight clothing during this time as it may stick and cause discomfort and irritation to the fresh tattoo. Also be mindful of how your sleeping and try not to rest tattoo up against your sheets.

Dressing/Second Skin – if your artist has applied a dressing such as second skin to your tattoo you will leave this on for the next 4-5 days. It may get a build up of excess plasma and ink and appear quite unappealing but please don’t remove it – this is normal. The only time you will need to remove it before the 4-5 days is up is if you have a reaction to the adhesive. If you experience any redness or irritation around the dressing please remove as soon as possible and proceed to treat as above. If the irritation persists please seek medical advice. If the dressing does not adhere well to your skin and is coming off before the 4-5 days is up its ok to remove it as well.

  • Moving forward

You may start to apply your aftercare cream once the weeping has subsided. This can take 2-3 days. Once the weeping has stopped apply a very small amount of tattoo aftercare cream twice a day sparingly. If you choose to use tattoo bepanthen ointment, please use sparingly. Although this is a great cream for tattoos experiencing healing difficulties it can also have a negative effect on the healing if smothered and used to heavily. Just a thin layer twice a day is more then enough. We sell some really lovely tattoo aftercare balms in store which will show you after your appointment and make suggestions based on your skin type and style of tattoo. You will need to continue to keep your tattoo clean and apply cream twice a day for about 3 weeks (some take slightly longer).

    Important Tips – The Do’s and Don’ts

    • No spray tanning, tanning lotions, perfume or sunscreen for the first 3 weeks as it may cause severe irritation to your tattoo.

    • Always use clean hands when applying creams to you fresh tattoo.

    • Do not submerge your tattoo in water other than your shower for the first 3 weeks. This includes swimming pools, spas, baths, dishwashing water, or saltwater at the beach.

    • Do not scratch or pick at your tattoo as it begins to heal as this can cause infections, scarring and loss of ink. If it gets itchy - Slap it, Don’t Scratch it!

    • Do not let your animals near your new tattoo. This can cause severe infections to your new tattoo. Treat it like an open wound.

    • Try to avoid tight clothing and those garments that have excess fluff and lint as this can get into your tattoo and cause infection.

    • No sun exposure until your tattoo is fully healed. This can cause ink to fade and skin to become damaged causing fall out. Keep them covered as best you can.

    • Do not re-bandage or cover your tattoo with gladwrap once you have removed it unless advised by your artist.

What you need to know

  • Do you take walk-ins?

Yes, we are more then happy to take walk-in appointments if time permits and we have an artist available for you. We suggest calling the studio ahead though to help avoid disappointment as this is subject to availability.

  • Is there a private room available?

We are pleased to be able to offer a completely private room upon request for your tattoo appointment if you would prefer. However this needs to be organised with your artist in advance to ensure the room is available for your booking date and time.

  • Is there parking available?

  • What payment types do you accept?

Payment options currently available in the studio are cash and EFTPOS. All deposits taken online will be via direct bank transfer. Your artist will guide you through this when you are organising a booking.

Inkpay is also available with some artists. Please check with your artist prior to booking if your wanting to pay via Inkpay to ensure they accept this payment type.

  • Do you do Cover-ups?

The short answer is Yes. You will need to book in for a free face to face consultation in most cover-up cases to discuss your ideas and for your artist to assess the existing tattoo so together you can come up with ideas and a realistic plan on how to best cover-up your existing tattoo successfully. Please don’t be offended if your artist does not take on the job. Some cover-ups are tricky and can’t always be done. We love happy customers and want to remain honest about possible outcomes.

  • Do you do touch-ups?

Most artists will offer a free touch up after 4-6 weeks (excluding fingers, hands and feet). You will need to contact your artist directly to arrange this. Only the artist who does your tattoo will do the touch-up for you.

If you are planning to get another tattoo soon we would appreciate if the touch up and new tattoo are both done at your next appointment.

  • What are the wait times for an appointment?

Wait times will vary between artists. It is normal to have to book weeks or even months in advance for quality artists. We will endeavour to keep wait times to a minimum but we highly recommend planning ahead and booking your tattoos in advance to avoid disappointment

  • Legal age for tattoos in NSW?

The legal age for tattoos without parental consent in NSW is 18 years old. However it is permitted by law to tattoo those 16 and up with parental consent. At Young Heart Tattoo Studio we take this very seriously. Every person getting tattooed will be asked to produce photo identification (drivers licence, photo card, passport, 18+ card) any discrepancies will result in refusal of the tattoo being performed. If you are 16 or 17 it is up to your artist if they wish to take on your tattoo. If they agree a parent or legal guardian will need to be present for the tattoo appointment and confirm design, size and placement. They will need to produce photo ID and the underage person being tattooed will need to produce photo ID. Proof of parent or legal guardianship will also need to be produced this may be in the form of a Medicare card with both parties names or legal document stating guardianship. Failure to produce substantial ID and evidence will result in refusal of service.

If we have to refuse service based on age discrepancies or lack of parental consent your deposit will be forfeited.

  • Can I use numbing cream?

We do not recommend clients use numbing cream before, during or after your tattoo. It can seriously affect the quality and healing of your tattoo whilst also causing the skin to react in a way that can make it difficult for your artist to work. Please speak to your artist directly if you are still considering using numbing agents.

  • Is there a minimum charge for tattoos? Shop minimum?

The shop minimum is $150. This is strictly a minimum spend per person. This fee covers the costs of material and equipment used during your appointment as well the artists time and the incidentals that come with running this studio. We strongly suggest if you are wanting something really small its worth having a chat with your artist about getting a few smaller ones done at the same time. Please note Guest artists and apprentices may have different minimum charges to the standard shop minimum and special events like Flash Days may also have a different minimum spend.

  • Do you do finger/hand tattoos?

In short Yes, but ultimately this is up to each individual artist. Resident artist Taleah Naomi Tattoo is more then happy to take on finger and hand tattoos as long as you have been educated on the issues that can arise with this tattoo placement.

You need to be aware that finger tattoos are not guaranteed to last and the ink is prone to falling out. We are unable to tell you how long they will last as it depends on factors such as your skin type and what you do for work. They can be touched up over time but there is a cost involved with this service (it is not a free touch-up like other areas).

  • Will I see my design before my appointment?

No. Standard procedure is that our artists will prepare your design to show you on the day of your appointment unless you discuss with your artist prior and make arrangements to pay an additional drawing fee to have it sent prior to your appointment time. Don’t stress! There will be time for you and your artist on the day to discuss the design and make small and reasonable adjustments together to ensure your 100% satisfied before proceeding with your tattoo.

  • Can I have a design drawn up without committing to having a tattoo done?

Yes, we are able to design tattoos for you even if you are not ready or completely committed to having the tattoo done just yet. We will charge you a drawing fee based on your design ideas. Once your happy with your design it will be sent to you as a file that you can choose to do what you like with. You will be allowed 2 free changes before extra charges are applied.

  • Do you sell aftercare products?

Yes. We have a range of aftercare products conveniently available to purchase in the studio.
